Why is it Important to Look After Your Piano? It’s important to take care of anything we take pride in and
this applies to musical instruments as well. For new owners of pianos, it can
help to have some advice and guidance on correct care and maintenance. Doing
this ensures that you can make the most of the instrument and use it to its
full potential.
If you have just invested in a piano, then it’s generally
advised to have this tuned four times within the first year. After this, you
should carry out tuning at least every 6 months. Regular tuning is recommended in
spring and then again in autumn. This is because there are changes in humidity
and weather which can impact on the health of your piano. If humidity gets
inside, it can cause serious problems including loose tuning pins, swelling of
action parts and keys, as well as rusty steel strings and unstable tuning.
There are some things you can do yourself to maintain and
care for your piano. Where you place it can make all the difference. It’s a
good idea to keep them away from stoves, fireplaces, windows that have drafts, heaters
and radiators. The sun can also have an impact, so try to keep it outside of
direct sunlight.
Humidity and Temperature Control To enable acoustic pianos and similar keyboard instruments
to perform at their optimum, they are best kept in an environment with an
ambient temperature of 40 – 60 °F (13 – 15 °C) with humidity of 40 – 50%.
When conditions vary above and below these limits, problems
to the instruments’ mechanism and tuning stability can arise. Factors which can
be associated with temperature and humidity variations include central heating,
external walls and excessive moisture as described above.
